Shown above is the first ever color photograph; it was taken by Scottish Physicist/Mathematician James Clerk Maxwell in 1861. When Maxwell took this image of a tartan ribbon using three separate filters (red, green, blue), he was not concerned with developing color photography, but rather with perception of color. Early in my Photo Editor career, I became a photo nerd and decided I had to know everything about the craft start to finish—turns out historical knowledge was not at all germane to the position. However, I did retain some interesting little tidbits of information . . . like this one.
